Our Director

Portrait of Jon 100 pixelsAt the beginning of my career as a counselor some 25 years ago, I found myself drawn to working with young adults who were leaving home for college.  My personal investment in this life stage came as no surprise, as it mirrored my own struggles as a young man with ADHD moving into the world.

Determined to use the gifts of knowledge and experience these years provided, I began to note and document the structure of what worked and did not work as these young people moved forward to create their lives. In time, trends began to emerge that raised questions, and from the answers to these questions emerged a set of principles. For example, what personal resources were at work when a student with ADHD moved from high school drop-out status to attain a GED, attend community college, and ultimately make his way into Law School?  How did this student open up this path and sustain his motivation, efforts, and focus along the way?    The answers revealed patterns of successful intervention and influence and began to evolve over time such that I was able to isolate them structurally, develop models to illustrate them, and shape them into a set of guiding principles.

Over the years, I refined the principles further and delighted to find them of greater and greater efficacy, not only for reorienting struggling college students, but also for preparing students before they left for college.  By avoiding the unnecessary steps of struggle and failure, these forearmed students also averted the negative impact upon self-esteem and self-concept that college failure inevitably brings.  When I followed up with students some time after they completed college, I was pleased and surprised to find they continued to use these principles quite successfully in many aspects of their lives.

Today The ADHD College Success Guidance Program seeks to put these tools into the hands of students taking the most important step of their journey toward creating their lives.  May this bring the possibility of academic success to the countless thousands – like me – for whom college success may have been only a dream.
